PACK HOLD CARRY

PACK HOLD CARRY 〰️
My Story… which started out with my frustration, turned into art.
Since 2013, My vision has been to solve the problem of how to make my backpack bigger at any moment. It was already full, and I couldn’t fit any more inside. I don’t want to carry it in my hands, and I don’t want to carry another bag. It’s already slowing me down, so how am I going to do this? I would like to keep it on my back and still free up my hands for other things. The frustration for me started with torn pockets, zippers, and an over-puffed-out backpack where you can’t get to things inside easily, and still trying to force things inside the pack because I was not going to carry it in my hands. I wanted enough room for key items that I would want or need to take with me and easily have access to them while keeping myself hands-free. This product has been with me for many years now through inception, and through lots of trial and error, I have a backpack accessory that works, while not overthinking it.
During my over-the-road trucking career, I found myself with my hands full, standing around or waiting in line at the truck stop for receipts, shower tickets, laundry, and even to eat. I remember just wanting my coffee and phone to hold, but I have a jacket draped over my arm, another bag for my toiletry, and/or laundry bag. I remember spilling some coffee over my jacket when I hunched over to grab a bag I put down. I said to myself I needed a better way to carry my things comfortably while keeping my hands free. I just wanted to pick up ONE pack/bag, not multiple bags and other stuff that is fumbling around in my hands. I love the idea of grab and GO! and my backpack was my go-to bag and still is today…. Back to my story, which was the breaking point for me to put my idea into action….
I remember switching out trucks due to repairs that needed to be done. I grabbed my backpack, tool bag, lunch box, folders, and trip sheets, and I forgot my blue tooth headset. I didn’t realize it till later. I was too concerned about all the other little bags. Do I have this? Do I have that? Don’t get me wrong, it was my fault. Rushing around never helps, and forgetting things will cost you time and money. So when I went back to the original truck that I had to switch out of to get my headset, of course, it was gone. There had to be a better way to consolidate all of the stuff I needed to carry and make it more comfortable to walk from point A to point B without a lot of stuff in my hands that was slowing me down; a better system needed to be done for me. I was driving myself crazy (no pun intended).
The “AHA!” moment came to me in a movie I watched with my wife. There was a war scene, and the soldiers had a net around their helmets to carry little things, making it readily convenient.
That’s when I thought a net around the backpack could do the trick. Later, I saw some old photos of Ellis Island and saw nets around crates and luggage that the immigrants had on their backs. I saw maybe the 1st concept of a backpack; how clever for the time, I thought. That photo stuck with me and assured me that I wasn’t alone in trying to carry more stuff out of necessity while being comfortable and, more importantly, HANDS-FREE. I knew my mission then, PACK-HOLD-CARRY.
So, I rounded the troops from home and pitched my product idea, and they gave me the support and green light to express my imagination and give it a go. I had to get to work and make my backpack accessory a reality. When you don’t know where to begin, just begin. The ball was rolling, my wheels were turning, and the concept from idea to art was a time-consuming complexity that was exciting from start to finish. This brought me to my second frustration: “How do I make this work?” without overthinking it… Don’t worry, I figured it out.
As an artist, two main objectives I learned in school are to be inquisitive and that whatever you want to start is just easier to begin. My product idea came with many questions: How will this work? What do I make it out of? More importantly, how do I not overthink this? How do I come up with a simple and functional concept and turn it into a reality? It started with a net of all different shapes, sizes, and materials.
Then came the rigging systems for the backpack. How will this attach to the backpack? And still make it easy to use. I will say some of the contraptions I came up with were ridiculous. After a lot of time learning how to craft a net, weaving nets, tying these knots, untying knots, adding this, and removing that, I finally have a durable, well-crafted product that works wonderfully! … and, more importantly, it’s simple! I finally came up with an external backpack net that you can wrap around your backpack, which creates a big pocket on the outside that you can adjust from various size items with a way to cinch up those items to keep them tight up against your pack and reduce the sway of your stuff for comfort and more importantly to PACK HOLD CARRY just a little bit more, to a lot more while keeping your hands free.
